Sarajevo at night
It was midnight, and wartime. Sarajevo, pitted all over with bullet marks, was dark and shuttered, and the airport was closed, but I got a seat on a minibus going down to the coast. Scattered ruins passed dismally by—house after house gaping in the darkness, with no signs of life but for a single dim light, perhaps on a ground floor or a fire burning in a brazier.
